Ceiling Fans

advantages of fans

  1. summer/winter switch means you may be able to reclaim heat trapped by your ceiling in winter.
  2. can be used to deter flys and mosquitos at outdoor entertaining areas
  3. at typically 60 watts it is no more expensive to run than a traditional light globe!!

Cost of fans

  1. running costs, 60 watts x 1 hour = NSW price @ 25c = 4.17 cents, ACT price at 17c = 2.83 cents.
  2. common brands are easier to service
  3. call me before buying
Buying a fan
  1. light fitting
  2. size
  3. shapes/efficencies
  4. remote or not

There are two commonly available types of ceiling fan mounting systems on offer today.

  • A traditional type that employs a robust metal bracket secured to the ceiling supporting the weight of the fan, independent of the decorative shroud covering the wiring.
  • A modern type that relies on a thin pressed metal plate mounted to the ceiling and the decorative shroud to support the weight of the fan.

Given a choice I will take the Traditonal robust metal bracket style thanks!!

An example of both types is pictured

NOTE Independent Electrical Solutions has recently found a very simple way to mount "pressed steel plate style" in a safer and more secure way.  I normally simply add this feature for free during installation!

how is a fan installed?

First we consider the location of the fan, taking note of the ceiling height and if any existing features such as lights are replaced or interferring your new fan/light combo?
Next we test any existing circuit which is to be re-used to ensure it will meet with the australian standards upon completion of the installation,
Normally a brace needs to be installed in your ceiling.  I typically manufacture these quickly onsite so they are an exact fit.
Generally we can re-use the existing light wiring to power the fan, but normally we also need to add one more wire to the switch
change/modify/add the wall/remote switch plate on the wall.
assemble the fan we will be installing
    install the fan
test the fan and controls are working correctly
    balance if required
provide an further instructions to customer if required
